30 States and 31 Months - But Who's Counting?
"Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will direct your paths." Proverbs 3:5-6
Praise God! He surely does direct our paths! We have been living now for 31 months as fulltime RVers. This map is on the outside of our Beacon and every time we visit a new state we add a picture of that state to our map. 30 states so far - 20 to go. (18 in the Beacon; Alaska and Hawaii via plane, train, ship....who knows!?)
It's been an incredible road trip - so many adjectives to describe life as an RVer: exciting, awesome, exhausting, fun, nerve racking, surprising, terrifying, satisfying, maddening, eye opening...the list goes on. Above all, our life on the road is blessed by our God who directs our paths and keeps us safe over the miles - so far 19,617 miles to be exact. God willing, we will add another 3464 miles to that by the time we land back in Arizona for the winter season this year.
Our scripture verse for 2020 was definitely this one-
"The heart of a man plans his way, but the LORD establishes his steps." Proverbs 16:9
It was amazing to us that during 2020, with all the craziness of covid and shutdowns and riots, we were able to travel 6773 miles from Arizona to the east coast and back again. God worked out all of the details and we learned to be oh so flexible in our travel planning. Some of the places we hadn't planned on but visited in 2020 included-
2 months spent in Williams AZ, the "Gateway to the Grand Canyon." What a great little Route 66 town and such an easy drive up to the south rim of the GC. In the middle of May the Grand Canyon opened up partially to visitors. We spent 2 days there with hardly anyone else around - what a surprise blessing from the Lord!
"O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth." Psalm 8:9
Eagle Nest and Red River, nestled high in the mountains at the top of New Mexico. A terrifying drive up there from Taos, never to be driven again while hauling our Beacon! We were in a little family owned park we affectionately called "Sardine-ville," but which offered beautiful views of the mountains and great fishing on the lake. We rode the ski lift to the top of the mountain in Red River and had a wonderful 2 weeks with RV friends. Unexpected blessings!
"Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised..." Psalm 48:1
Two stops in Missouri - Excelsior Springs and St. Louis. We had a fun lunch with a committee of folks with whom Jim worked in transitional ministry and toured their town of Excelsior Springs, then spent a weekend visiting with Jim's cousin and family outside St. Louis. A blessed time of fellowship with new friends and with family, and fantastic parks to stay in both places.
A wedding in Pennsylvania. Jim was able to perform the marriage ceremony for cherished friends - covid restrictions were lifted a bit just in time for the wedding. A week spent with my mom and 2 weeks spent with our daughter and grandchildren and extended family. All wonderful precious times which we didn't think would happen in 2020, but God had all things in His control.
"O Lord, you are my God; I will exalt you, I will praise your name, for you have done wonderful things." Isaiah 25:1
A visit to the Ark Encounter in Kentucky. Incredible and enlightening. A gospel message from the Old Testament, in visual form - God saves!
"The Lord is my strength and my song; He has become my salvation." Exodus 15:2
We were able to spend Labor Day weekend with longtime much loved friends in South Carolina, the Snows. It was so good to be together and God gave us a final DQ Blizzard treat with them before we left town. Roger went home to Glory in April this year, and we are so thankful to have had that cherished time together.
Our RV park in October was in Kerrville TX. Sometimes God just blesses us with things which make us smile and remind us how much He truly loves us. Our park was set in a pecan orchard and next door was a miniature horse farm. I fed them watermelon, celery and carrots every day - so much fun!
"Blessed is the person who trusts in the LORD..." Jeremiah 17:7
November had us back into Grapevine Texas at one of our favorite resorts, the Vineyards. We were there for a month and enjoyed the preparations in town for the holidays and ate Thanksgiving meal on our picnic table with Molly and Gregory. After helping decorate their Christmas tree, we were back on the road and drove 1000 miles back to Arizona for the winter season.
"The LORD protects you; the LORD is a shelter right by your side...the LORD will protect you from all harm; he will protect your life. The LORD will protect your coming and going both now and forever." Psalm 121: 5-8
What an incredible God blessed 2020 we had, in spite of all that occurred to seemingly be roadblocks to our travels. All of our well planned reservations were either cancelled or changed, but God had it. The virus never stopped us and we remained healthy all year. God kept us. Along the way we had tire blowouts, tank issues, cataract surgery issues, rain and ice to contend with, tour plans changed, and the list goes on. But God knew and had all things in His plan. We were exactly where we were supposed to be in 2020 - in God's hands.
And now it's the last day of August 2021, and it's been another great year of travel. We're presently in Idaho, headed up to Montana and Wyoming for a bit, and then down to Texas and Arizona.
